Analostalgia

Portmanteau of ‘analogue’ and ‘nostalgia’.

  1. A wistful yearning for analogue technology.
  2. A means of time travel…
This nine-track album, analostalgia, is a narrative of analogue technology in our digital age.

What started as a photography project using two analogue cameras inherited from my great-grandfather grandmother turned into an exploration of my love of the tactile qualities analogue tools: their feel, their sound. I wanted to capture their sound in a digital narrative. Welcome to analostalgia.

It was recorded over a freezing weekend on Kaurna Country, in my late father’s old recording studio in the backyard of my childhood home. I grew up around music, but I’m not a musician, although some of my earliest memories are of playing around in my father’s studio.

I recorded and produced this album with my stepfather Martin Jones, who is an extraordinary sound engineer,. My instruments were analogue cameras, typewriters, paper, pens and landline telephones.

This project was supported by Creative Australia through a Digital Fellowship.

Analostalgia is a project that explores how using analogue technologies in our digital world enables us to time travel by connecting us through time, space and place. In 2022, I inherited two analogue cameras: one from my great-grandfather (a Kodak Folding Brownie 2) and one from my grandmother (an Olympus Trip 35).

In 2023, I took part in the Australia Council and Creative New Zealand’s Digital Fellowship Program and created Analostalgia, a textual, photographic and audio storytelling project.
